Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roy Rouge 2019
Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roy Rouge 2019
Pinot Noir from Sancerre, Loire, France
Winemaker Notes
Hand-harvested and carefully transported in 40-kg crates, this wine begins with meticulous sorting—70% of the grapes are destemmed before fermentation in tanks equipped with automatic cap punching. The wine undergoes an infusion-style maceration for approximately 25 days at controlled temperatures, with minimal intervention through occasional pump-overs and punch-downs. Aged entirely in wood, it spends time in both 228-liter Burgundy barrels and 600-liter demi-muids. After being blended and racked in November 2021, the wine continues maturing in vats for another 20 months before bottling in July 2023. In the glass, it shows a deep red color with a purple hue. The nose offers immediate aromatic complexity, with ripe berries, black fruits, floral notes—especially violet—and a subtle backdrop of vanilla and mineral graphite. On the palate, the wine balances a velvety, airy texture with a full-bodied, sappy profile. Tannins are broad and mouth-filling, while berry flavors return alongside hints of praline. A warm yet balanced finish is lifted by lingering violet and vanilla through retronasal aromas. While it’s drinking beautifully now, this wine also holds the potential to age gracefully over the next five to six years.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with slow cooked beef cheek, braised deer ribs, and venison roast with blackcurrants.
